Most of us probably have already learnt about the unpleasant burning sensation on the skin caused by nettles and that we should stay away from them in early childhood. But did you also know that nettles can have a great effect in and on the body? We´ll explain what it can do:
This is what the nettle contains:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin B
- Vitamin K
- Flavonoids (e.g.: rutin)
Effect of nettle in and on the body
The “weed” has also a great spectrum of effects due to its many different substances. Learn how to use these effects for your body, too!
On the one hand, the plant can have a preventive and soothing effect on cystitis, as the contained flavonoids have a water-driving effect. The plant is usually consumed as tea. The stinging nettle is also frequently used in this form during a dehydration cure.
Have you ever eaten nettles? Probably not. But it is quite obvious something you should consider. After all, the vitamin C content of nettles is higher than that of citrus fruits, and the iron content is even 2-4 times higher than that of beef steak. The calcium content is 6 times higher than cow’s milk and even up to 9% protein is contained in the plant. Sounds really good! But: How can you eat something that is so unpleasant to touch? Cooking neutralizes the hairs of the nettle (which are responsible for the burns). You can find many recipes on the net. Well then, bon appétit!
Furthermore, certain active ingredients of the nettle stimulate the blood circulation. This is why the plant is also recommended as a remedy against hair loss in natural cosmetics. Unfortunately, there are not enough studies on this yet.
Nettle is also believed to have a positive effect on rheumatism and arthritis. Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence for this. However, it is certain that the plant has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.
Last but not least: nettle can inhibit bacterial growth and inflammation and is therefore very useful for impure skin, irritations, rashes, eczema, acne, psoriasis or dermatitis.
The already mentioned circulation stimulation obviously also is beneficial for the skin. It looks fresh and appears younger.
The herb has also been proven to have adstringent effects. As a result, you´ll notice much smaller pores.
